B&D League - Part 2, Week 6 round-up

Another lead change in Division 1, while NICS slip up in the Division 2 title hunt.

Division 1

Muldoons 1 4.5-0.5 Lagan

Muldoons 1 sent a message that they're not out of the title race yet with this comfortable win over Lagan. They were helped by the absence of some of Lagan's stronger players such as George Heathwood and Tom Esmonde, but this could prove to be a valuable result when all is said and done. Only Stephen Wood's draw with Gerald Harvey spoiled the whitewash for the home side.

Belfast South 1 2-3 Lindores

The postponement of Fisherwick's match with Ballynafeigh 2 gave Lindores an opportunity to retake the lead if they beat Belfast South 1. They came away with the win, but with every half-point potentially making a difference - and Fisherwick having a match in hand, of course - they will be disappointed to only have done so by the slimmest of margins. Ray Devenney earned a creditable draw against Gabor Horvath on the top board, while on board 3 the 2012 Ulster Masters champion Alan Delaney made his Lindores debut with a win over Bruce MacLean. He could well turn out to be a valuable addition to the squad from the point of view of the Silver King. Lindores' board 4, Ross Harris, has been on good form lately, coming 3rd in the Williamson Shield, but came a cropper against John Bryars.

Division 2

Fruithill 4-1 Muldoons 2

With only four players available, it was always going to be a struggle for Muldoons 2 to come away with anything from this trip to west Belfast. While Pat McKillen put in a good performance to beat Frank Carrothers, that was the sole positive for the away side as they fell to a 4-1 defeat.

Ballynafeigh 3 3-2 NI Civil Service

Both of Ballynafeigh's Division 2 teams were in action at Ballynafeigh Community House on Tuesday night. The 3rd team put on a great display to beat NICS (and bring Bangor closer to the John Strawbridge Cup in the process), with two excellent individual performances in particular. On board 4, NICS' Adrian Dornford-Smith, who had won prizes at both Bunratty and the Williamson Shield in the past month, fell to Paul Anderson, rated over 300 points lower. Meanwhile, in a wild tactical slugfest on board 2, Paddy Magee once again beat Alan Burns - and with no board order discrepancies, this time it would count towards the result.

Ballynafeigh 4 1.5-3.5 Belfast South 2

The 4th team weren't as successful, but put up a spirited performance against "Kelly's Heroes". Dennis Wilkinson, Bill Lavery and Eoin Carey all achieved good draws against their BS2 counterparts, Neil Green, Bernard Jaffa and Cathal Murphy respectively, whilst Martin Kelly and George Jackson were given tough games by John Price and Tanya Jones but prevailed in the end.
