Ulster Champions were crowned at Methodist College on Sat 6th Dec 2025
Pupils arrived from all over Ulster. With age groups represented : U8 / U10 / U12 / U14 / U16 and U19.
Pupils collected problem sheets to be done between rounds. We had 3 rooms, 2 for play and 1 for parents.
As we had 5 under 8's we did as last year. We setup a seperate al-play-all just for the under 8s. So that when they completed their game in the main event we got them to play a second game in this smaller tournament with 5mins each.

These are taken from the 2 brilliant books : 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations – Fred Reinfeld / 1000 Checkmate Combinations – Victor Henkin
With everyone registered we did our first draw. We decided on one section as it gives the younger players an opportunity to be the Ulster Champion. Our youngest in previous years has been Ethan Cole when he was Under10. Ethan now plays in the First Division in Ulster Chess ( Strand Team - who he has helped win the Silver King) and has played many times in International tournaments for Ireland. Today he was with other top players including Alwin Michael, Bohdan Prokopenko and Timothy McClenahan.

Its brilliant to see new faces at these tournaments. One such player Jatin Jakati upset the approx ratings by beating the young Daniel Simpson. The first round is usually the toughest for the younger players as the top ratings play the lower ratings. All seem to have gone to age apart from Abhiram Ganja winning against Nathan Johnston.

Ethan and Bohdan start a slow game, ending in a rush of moves, pieces flying. Bohdan blunders and Ethan wins. Exciting chess. Every game is a little jewel of magic and art. The young and much talented Alex McKeown gets a good win against Jonah Corr. Alex is also a very talented puzzle solver. I think heres a player yet to reach his full potential and definately to watch. Some other youngsters high up in the tables are the under 12s Kia Jahandizi, Jatin Jakati and Shreyas Chandra Marrivada. and the Under 10s are well represented by Soundharya Premkumar and Abhiram Ganja. The youngest are also doing well with Daniel Simpson on board 10.

The puzzles are collected and marked. With a large no of players this takes a little time and concentration. and of course I have some puzzles that players find alternative solutions to, making it more challenging to mark. I am ably assisted by fellow volunteer Amol Thoke who with Geoff Hindley have run the second room for the day.

The final round Ethan wins on board won having not lost a game ends with full points of 6 out of 6. Followed closely by Alwin Michael and Bohdan Prokopenko on 5 points. Peter Murphy on 4.5 points. and then a chasing group on 4 points. This shows the standard of players and how close the tournament has been. Some brilliant endgames. Some fast accurate quick play finishes. The players are to be thanked for a brilliant tournament, Parents for supporting the players, Volunteers for making the event possible, the Ulster Chess Union for creating a calender of events that includes this, Methodist College for the Venue.
Remember its not winning but the pleasure of solving/struggling and analysing a game - each game is a little work of art.
Ethan Cole wins the tournament on the same day that Brendan Jamison (Bangor Chess Club https://bangorchess.com/ President and brilliant organiser) awards him with the title of Club Chess Master for reaching the FIDE Classic rating of 2018.
