Childrens Chess kicked off in November - a warm-up for the Ulster Championships.

The first Childrens chess of the year was held at Methodist College on November 2nd. This starts the group of tournaments that leads to the top players being invited to Award Ceremony in June (previously held at Stormont). Quality Chess played by players from P2 to Upper Sixth. An excellent opportunity to practice for the Ulster Schools Championships in December.

In attendance we had 6 Primary pupils and 8  Secondary students. Plenty of chess was played and puzzles solved. The Primary section played an all play all round Robin with a break with a short competition of Battle-Chess - The players have a King and 4 pawns each and have to place these on their own side of the board. A board hides their opponents side of the board from view whilst this is happening. Then once the separator is removed the game commences as an end-game with the winner being the first to Queen a pawn safetly. A brilliant way of practicing your end-game. The skill is both in the play and how you initially place your pieces.

The tournament provided excellent practice for Decembers Ulster Schools Championships. Looks like in the Primary section we have a couple of contendors Avery Fiachra, Calvin Patterson and Pheobe Patterson.

The Secondary students played a 7 round swiss. The skill level is high and there will be an excellent calibre of Championships this year.
