At the annual Ulster Chess Union Prizegiving on 27 September 2000 at the Civil Service Chess Club UCU President Tony Beckett announced a major boost for Ulster chess.
Williamson Shield and Henderson Cup 2000 Report
The Williamson Shield was played on the 30th September and 1st October at the Staff Common Room, Queen's University, Belfast.
Ulster Matchplay Championship for the Alex Beckett Trophy
Played over three successive weekends between 22 October and 5 November 2000.

Primary Schools' Team Event 1 June 2001
24 teams from 6 primary schools from as far apart as Portstewart and Killinchy competed in this event. The winners were "The Noble Knights" from Inchmarlo Preparatory School, Belfast.
Primary Schools' Individual Event 7 June 2001
First prize went to Steven Mullan of Cairnshill Primary School with 5 points from his 5 games. In second place was Nigel Chan of Inchmarlo Preparatory School.
Belfast Summerfest
40 competitors competed in 2 sections - an excellent turnout considering that many Ulster chess clubs are closed for the summer.
