Primary Schools' Individual Event 7 June 2001

First prize went to Steven Mullan of Cairnshill Primary School with 5 points from his 5 games. In second place was Nigel Chan of Inchmarlo Preparatory School.

The second of this year's Primary Schools' Chess Challenges was scheduled for what turned out to be Election Day. Unfortunately this meant some of the Schools who normally send competitors were closed for the day, resulting in a smaller number than usual competing, though the final number of 45 was still a good turnout. However, this did mean one more round than usual could be played, which gave a good chance that there would be an outright winner. And so it turned out. After 4 rounds had been completed, two boys from Cairnshill Primary School, Steven Mullan and Grant Abernethy, were the only competitors to have won all their games. They met in the fifth and final round and after a well-fought encounter Steven won the game and the event.
