UCU Annual Blitz Championship Returns This Festive Season

The Ulster Chess Union is delighted to invite players of all levels to its Annual Blitz Championship, a much-loved tradition held between Christmas and New Year. Renowned for its fast pace, competitive spirit, and friendly atmosphere, the event has become a seasonal highlight on the Ulster chess calendar.

A Growing Tradition

The first UCU Blitz Championship took place on Tuesday 27 December 2011 at the Boat Club, with Calum Leitch claiming the inaugural title. What began as a modest 16-player tournament has gone from strength to strength, reaching 51 entrants last season and firmly establishing itself as one of the most popular blitz events in the region.

In 2022, the championship reached another milestone with the introduction of a perpetual trophy, the Jamison Cup. Named in honour of Brendan Jamison, the trophy recognises his outstanding contribution to Ulster chess through organising and arbitrating numerous FIDE-rated blitz and rapid events. Thanks to his efforts, many local players have earned their first-ever FIDE ratings.

Venue and Thanks

The championship has been hosted at several venues over the years, and the UCU is especially grateful to Fruithill Chess Club for generously providing a venue for this year’s event free of charge. Their warm welcome continues the strong community spirit that defines Ulster chess.

Tournament Information

Format: 18 rounds

Time Control: 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment

Sections: One open section FIDE rated

Schedule

Check-in: 9:30 – 9:45

Rounds 1–9: 10:00 – 12:30

Lunch Break: 12:30 – 13:30

Rounds 10–18: 13:30 – 16:00

Prize-giving: 16:15

Entry Fee: £15 per player

Entry Deadline

Entries must be submitted to Karina Campbell no later than 12:00 noon on Wednesday 24 December.

To ensure the smooth running of the event, no late entries will be accepted.

Looking Ahead

The next major UCU event on the calendar is the Williamson Shield 2026, a FIDE-rated tournament taking place from 23–25 January 2026 at the Maynard Sinclair Pavilion, Belfast.
