March's Childrens Chess Sees New Faces
Its always good to see new faces at these tournaments. Both for the regular players to have new opponents and an excitement of where will they be positioned at the end of the day. The tough Secondary section has been dominated by the Robbin brothers, Kevin and Kiran. With their absence from the tournament the field was open. Would this years successful new-comer Andrew Todd win the day? We will have to see...or would total new comer Eoin McCorkindale have something to say...
New faces in the primary section also meant an exciting tournament and a challenge for the controller who initially setup a round-robin, only to regret this when more pupils registered during round 1 to give a total of 9 players.
The afternoon was full of chess games, puzzle solving, banter and good humored fun.

My favourite of the day is the puzzle solving - it allows discussion about chess positions. The solution to a logical problem and some instances of potential combinations for pattern recognition in actual play. A fun way of improving your chess and - yes - some positions are just beautiful and elegant. Todays winners were Peter Todd and John Dawson.
