Top young players meet at Methodist College for Northern Ireland Mega-finals

The Delancey UK Chess Challenge is the largest Schools Chess tournament in the UK with some 74,000 children competing. There are four stages - the first is small tournaments in Schools. Qualifying players then play in the Mega-finals. There are 41 mega-finals of which Belfast hosts one. Who played and who qualified for the next stage at the Giga-finals...

Schools/organisations represented included:

Childrens Chess, Good Shepherd PS, Enniskillen Royal Grammar, HollyBush Primary School, Markethill Primary School, All Saints Chess Club...

A total of 29 children gathered to compete and enjoy chess. It's always a challenge to split the youngsters into the best age groups. If you mix them, which you sometimes have to do, the qualifying points can be impacted. So I aim to keep younger players playing the younger players. So this year we had 4 sections. The Under 10's, the Under 11's, the Under 16's and the Under 19's.

The format takes most of the day and approx 1 hour per round. Which is quite exhausting for the younger players. But everyone was focused and enjoyed the day. Solving problems for  a competition between rounds, as well as playing friendlies and chatting. The atmosphere was excellent.

The Under 10's included the twin brothers Pablo and David Gonzalez top players from Spain, currently at Newcastle Primary School.

The rules for qualification are to score 4 or more out of the 6 games or to win your age group. Top Boy and Top Girl qualify.

We wish all the qualifiers luck in the forth-coming Giga-finals in Manchester.

As there was only one person Under19 a strong player - Eoin McCorkindale we had a small tournament of club players including Ross Harris and Mark Newman. Eoin played very well and beat Mark and was awarded the Under19 Supremo title.

The next stage of the competition is the Northern Giga-Finals in July - details : http://www.ukchesschallenge.com/north-south-gigafinal-divisions.shtml

The official website with news etc is : http://www.delanceyukschoolschesschallenge.com/index.html

We wish all the qualifiers good luck for the next stage - we will let you know how they do - watch the space (well not exactly this space but this website).
