Williamson Shield 2013 Day 1

The 2013 Williamson Shield is taking place over the 9-10 February weekend.

29 players are competing at the Maynard Sinclair Pavilion, a little down on last year's turnout for the centenary edition but there is still a strong field, with a surprise top seed - Gabor Horvath,  a 2266 FIDE-rated Hungarian. Defending champion Michael Waters is the second seed.

Time-limit is 70 minutes for the game with a 30 second increment from Round 1. With no guillotine finish, endgame knowledge becomes more important and the occasional game can continue well beyond the traditional 3 hour session. So it was with the Round 2 game between McKenna and Waters, with the latter winning the legendary Rook and Bishop versus Rook ending and which only finished 10 minutes before the beginning of Round 3.
