Schools Ulster Championships 2012

The most presitigous event on the schools Chess Calender was held at Methodist College. Some 31 students battled to become the Ulster Champion. The youngest player was 5 years Admira Kecskemeti who was awarded Ulster Under 7's Champion. We also had the international junior player Karina Kruk who won the overall Championship. With players coming from schools as far a field as St Columbs College. Run by the Ulster Schools Chess Council who together with the UCU run a calender of events - approx one per month.

Under7 plays Under12 Champion

The quality of play was enjoyable to watch. There was tension, quiet but concentrated thought. Four sections ending with 6 Champions:

Karina Kruk : Under 19 Ulster Champion

Kiran Robbin : Under 16 Ulster Champion

Joel Dawson : Under 14 Ulster Champion

Lucia Corrigan : Under 12 Ulster Champion

Honor Parissis : Under 10 Ulster Champion

Admira Kecskemeti : Under 7 Ulster Champion

Under 19s played a five round all play all. The section included the Irish International Karina Kruk who also holds the title of Womans Candidate Master. Karina is off next week to represent Ireland at the World Youth Chess Championships, Maribor, Slovenia, 7-19 November 2012.

The under16's played a six round swiss - with a battle between the brilliant two brothers Kiran and Kevin Robbin. Both scoring the same points but a decision was made using the buch order together with the result that Kiran had beaten Kevin in an exciting match in round 4.

Under 16 section of the 2012 Ulster Championships

The under14s played a seven round all play all. Joel Dawson winning the Championship without dropping a point. Sean Brown from St Columbs coming a close second.

The Under12s included Admira Kecskemeti who still only 5 years old held her own to come joint 4th in the section. The overall winner Lucia Corrigan won all her games.

A chess problem competition was held consisting of some 22 chess puzzles - some of these are elegent problems and an excellent way of improving your chess.
