Ulster Schools Championships 2015-2016
The Ulster Champion title for schools is awarded to the winner of the Under 19 section. We have a brilliant form 1 student Peter Todd who decided to play up and move sections from Under14 to Under19 to win the championship. The numbers of players meant we mixed the sections and played two tournaments Under 12 and Under 19. This year saw a new trophy donated anonymously for the Champion - a beautiful hand made silver Goblet.
The Secondary section played a six round swiss each player having 25mins on the clock. Whilst the Primary section played an 8 round swiss.
Throughout the day a puzzle competition had the youngsters thinking hard to solve some beautiful problems.
The winner of the Primary Puzzles was the U8 Avrora Zelenchuk followed closely by Calum Glendinning.

Peter Todd almost won the under 19 title. Coming second overall on the same points as brother Andrew and Eoin McCorkindale on 5 points. A very close finish.
In the Primary section we had 8 rounds and some upsets. The young Dexter Harris arrived missing round one and managed to beat some of the leading players, giving the section an exciting ending. Three players ended on 6 points out of 8, Pheobe Patterson (the U12 Champion), Michael Callaghan (U12) and the Under 10 Champion Calvin Patterson. This year it looks like the families of Patterson and Todd have dominated the championships.
Thanks to every player. Those who won and those who lost. The chess was brilliant and the atmosphere friendly and fun. Thanks also to Methodist College for the excellent venue, to Gerry Tate for running the tournament and to the volunteers from the Ulster Chess Union, James Fairley and Geoff Hindley.
