The Belfast London Junior Chess Championship Qualifier

The Chess calendar for students started with the opportunity to qualify to the prestigious LJCC. With a day event and the first of the year we are never quite sure of the number of players who will attend. But fortunately we had new faces and some excellent chess.

The London Junior Chess Championships is a very prestigous tournament - even just to get there. players under 12 have to qualify for a place. Over 12 and you can enter without qualifying.

As people arrived we take names and birth dates and allocate to the sections. We had 4 under 12's, 2 under 10's and 5 under 8's what todo?

After some discussion we decided to have an all-play-all section for the Under12 - playing each player twice, black and white. The Under 8's and Under 10's were grouped together and we ran a 7 round all-play-all tournament.

With the Older players we had one Under14 Daniil Zelenchuk and an under19 Jake Patterson who played each other twice in the morning and then in the afternoon another student arrived and with a couple of eager playing Parents.we had an afternoon tournament of all-play-all which was enjoyed by everyone.

The chess was fun - the atmosphere was fun. Its a long day for the younger players - we had a problem solving competition and a talk on one of the problems. Unfortunately the organiser was challenged by the computer breaking - it was quite lucky we had all play all and the full rounds all printed out.
