Schools Individual Ulster Champion crowned

Young Chess players gathered at Methodist College to play to be crowned an Ulster Champion.

The most prestigious title in Ulster Schools Chess - the Ulster Champion. The players were divided into the age groups Under12, Under14, Under16 and Under19. Each category would produce an age group champion. With the under 19 winner being crowned Schools Ulster Chess Champion.

Each category had numbers that allowed us to play all-play-all tournaments. The top players fighting for the main title were John Dawson (Friends), Eoin McCorkindale (Ballymena Academy),Thomas Donaldson (RBAI), Andrew Todd (Bangor Grammar), Joshua Geary (Bangor Grammar),Jake Patterson (Home Educated).

Plenty of exciting chess with players having 30mins each on the clock. Brilliant Chess problems and a puzzle competition.

During the day chess problems were discussed and solved. One of the top Ulster Players Gareth Annesley gave some coaching covering the topic of discovered attacks with some brilliant chess positions.

After some brilliant games the Ulster Champion was Thomas Donaldson unbeaten with 5 out of 5.
