Coaching and fun at Novembers Childrens Chess
With a hall full of 27 young chess players. The afternoon was going to be full of chess fun.
The primary section saw some new faces and some regulars. Pheobe and Calvin previous winners were out to battle all comers. How would previous Stormont award winner Fiachra Avery fair? Relative newcomers Twins Jack, Matthew McWilliams, Leon Geraghty, Muthisan Piranthesan, Eoghan and Johnny Duffy, Eva Rown and Calum Glendinning made up a tough section.
During the tournament puzzles were discussed, analysed and solved.
Between rounds we were lucky to have top Ulster chess player Gareth Annesley coaching. The topic of the day was pins. Covering what they are and how they can be used to win a game using the projector to talk through some fantastic positions.

There are some 33 problems. A sheet each for the primary and secondary sections each containing 22 problems. Two examples are shown below. Try your hand at them. The second one is particulary trickey. Problems are a brilliant way to practice and improve your chess. Answers given at bottom of this article.

At this series of tournaments players score points and the top 4 players of each section, Primary, Lower School and Upper School are invited to an award ceremony and Elite tournament at Stormont. Click here and see details of last years event
We collect the puzzles at about 4:00pm and mark them, returning them to their owners at the prize giving with a certificate, Gold/Silver and Bronze. The puzzles are a great way to put your chess analysis skills to the test. Analysing a position you havent met before is brilliant for your chess.
The primary winner of the puzzle solving: Pheobe Patterson with 9 closely followed by Fiachra Avery with 8.
The secondary winner put in a brilliant performance solving problems that I had to check the answers to. Eoin McCorkindale with 17 a fantastic result.

Eoin McCorkindale not only winning the Problem solving in style but the tournament undefeated with 7 out of 7. Followed by Jake Patterson on 5.5 and Andrew Todd, John Dawson on 4.5. This is a tough section with some excellent players. Promising a good year of competitive chess.
