Ulster Championships 2014 - report after day 2
The Ulster Championships are being held over the August Bank Holiday weekend at the Belfast Europa Hotel.
Summer School 2014. A new venue and lots of fun.
This year saw the Summer School at a new venue. The Ballynafeigh Bowling Club - Ormeau Park. A beautiful setting for some fun chess. We had 14 youngsters playing endgames, solving problems and playing in a competition.
Only 7 weeks left
The Summer Tournament is into the home straight with only 7 weeks left to go. Over the past 11 weeks there has been some fine, competitive chess and plenty of upsets and turnarounds with plenty more to come no doubt.
2014 Ulster Championships to be held at top Belfast Hotel: The Europa
This year sees a guaranteed prize fund totaling £1000 and for the eighth successive year the Europa Hotel is hosting the Ulster Chess Union's premier tournament over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Lavery Grabs Honours
Sunday's final NICS Rapidplay was competing with the World Cup and some of the best weather we have had in quite a while. Still, a dozen stalwarts turned out to make Nick Pilkiewicz and Robert Lavery work for their prizes.

Stormont a perfect location to celebrate chess talent
The annual Belfast Scholastic awards took place at Stormont on 30th May. Celebrating another brilliant year of chess. Kieran McCarthy MLA invited Children, Parents, Teachers to enjoy this historic building and play some chess.
Top youngsters play in Northern Ireland Mega-final
Saturday 17th May saw some 29 children play excellent chess at the UK Chess Challenge Northern Ireland Mega finals and enjoy some coaching from top Ulster Chess player Gareth Annesley.
Eglantine Summer tournament begins
With the end of the league the opportunity to play rated slow games continues over the summer with this excellent tournament. Some 20 players took the opportunity.
The Belfast City has been moved from 24/25 May to June 7/8
Unfortunately unexpected issues with our venue has meant we have had to move the dates of the Belfast City tournament. It will now take place on 7/8th June.
Gawain Jones plays 28 Club players at RBAI wed 14th May.
Ulster Chess players had the excellent opportunity of going head to head with the top Grand Master Gawain Jones. Would any one beat him!

Muldoons Triumph
In a rearranged fixture, Muldoons invited NICS to an "away" match at their home venue; that is the venue was at NICS but Muldoons played the home team - for board colours. Maybe it was the opening colours, but NICS definitely did not have any home advantage.
Arthur Cootes Trophy given to new Ulster Rapidplay Champion
The Ulster Rapidplay Championship 2014 was played in Ballynafeigh Community Centre and a new Champion was awarded the Arthur Cootes Cup.
Ulster Teams play in Leinster Chess Union Junior Team Challenge.
Two Ulster teams travelled to Dublin to play in the LCU Junior team challenge. A tournament that included a visiting team from Manchester, a girls Leinster team and the Stokes Cup Team winners.
The Final Childrens Chess decides Stormont Players.
The April 2014 Childrens Chess tournament saw over 30 children enjoying the brilliant game of Chess. This the last childrens chess tournament of the year decides the players invited to the Stormont Award Ceremony.
