The centenary edition of the Williamson Shield
1912 was the year that first saw competition for the Williamson Shield. After only two more editions, the Great War intervened and it was 1923 before play resumed for the "Championship of Belfast". The "second series" ended in 1929 but the end of the second World War saw a massive resurgence in competitive chess and the Williamson Shield reappeared in 1945. The "third series" continues to this day.
