UCU Golf Society Inaugural Outing at Ormeau

Successful first outing of the UCU Golf society, but Kelly misses first place at Malahide chess

The three musketeers swung into action as they swapped codes from chess to golf at Ormeau Park. The society 'putt' their best foot forward on the fairways and greens as CJ Murphy drew first blood with 16 points over the nine holes played. Society President Martin Kelly was almost as rusty as his clubs, but did manage to halve with Murphy on two of the nine holes - well he hadn't played for 30 years, or so he says. There were also a few 'caddy' remarks from Hon. Sec. Philip Morrison on the short 6th as he managed to outdrive Kelly.

In the nineteenth, ahem Parador, Kelly made a dart for the door as Murphy made it two wins out of two this time at the oche. Well they were heading to Malahide early the following day.

They should have stuck to darts down south when Kelly hit a 156 in Gibneys, as there were no chess prizes heading north. Kelly was best placed on 4.5 with a draw on board 1 in round 6. Murphy and Morrison finished on 3 each in the same under 1400 section. See ICU web for full crosstables at www.icu.ie

All new members to the golf society are welcome as Kelly is in charge of arranging further outings. Contact Philip, Cathal or Martin at the Civil Service summer chess tournament any Wednesday evening at Maynard Sinclair Pavillion.
