Summer School a brilliant 3 days of chess endings

The annual Ulster Chess Union Summer Chess School took place on 7th, 8th, 9th August at the beautiful venue of Ballynafeigh Bowling Club. With the assistance of Ross Harris, Geoff Hindley and Michael Wong.

Fourteen young chess players arrived at the beautiful Ballynafeigh Bowling Club - a hidden gem in the Ormeau Park. Over three days they played chess. Worked through sheets of endgame problems. Solved chess puzzles in a puzzle competition. Discussed chess in team chess games - where teams of 2 play each other and discuss their plans infront of their opponents so both sides have the challenge of their opponents knowing their plans..... plenty of chess chat. Endgame play was practiced with a competition of Battle chess where the players have 4 pawns and a King and place these on the board without their opponent seeing their position - a sheet/or spare board hides the players side of the board from each other. A nice mix of ages from 6 to 12 and a nice mix of skilled players.

Many thanks to the brilliant volunteers Ross Harris, Geoff Hindley and Michael Wong. Also to the brilliant venue.

The fantastic youngsters showed their concentration and brilliance by working through some complicated endgame positions.

The lunchtimes with the sun out the students were outside playing chase - with some time spent playing games like Othello, Fanorona, Abalone...

The last day ended with the Ulster Chess President Ross Harris handing out the awards for the competitions  - everyone received a certificate of attendance to the school - which had a group photo on it. Further photos and results below.

Thanks to all those who attended for a brilliant 3 days of chess...

Over the three days we had interspersed between the endgame exercises a 6 round individual competition and a three round battle chess where each player played both as Black and White. Results and photos follow.
