Ballynafeigh 1 hunted down by Hawks

(B&D League 2018/19 Week 10) Ballynafeigh 1 suffered another setback as they were beaten by an under-strength Fruithill Hawks team.

Division 1

  • Ballynafeigh 1 1.5-3.5 Fruithill Hawks
  • QUB 1 3-2 Ballynafeigh 2
  • Kelly's Heroes 3-2 Civil Service

Ballynafeigh 1 fell to their second consecutive defeat as they were beaten by the Fruithill Hawks, who move into second place. Ciaran Marron (1597) pulled off the upset of the week as he saw off nine-time Ulster Champion Steve Scannell (1944), with Gatis Barbals producing another fine result with a win against WFM Karina Kruk. Tony Parker defeated Alan Thomason, while John Monaghan (1102) pulled off an impressive draw against Ian Woodfield (1588). David Houston won for the home side against John Masterson. It remains tight at the bottom, as Ballynafeigh 2 and Civil Service both fell to narrow defeats. QUB 1 prevailed over the former thanks to wins from Daniel Diaz-Roncero Gonzalez and Robert Clarke and draws on the top two boards, while John McKenna of Kelly's Heroes was on the right side of the sole decisive result against Civil Service, with the other four games being drawn.

Division 2

  • Northern Lights 3.5-1.5 The B Team
  • Bangor 1 3-2 Strand 2
  • QUB 2 3.5-1.5 Fruithill Falcons

Northern Lights maintained their lead at the top with victory over The B Team. Nicholas Pilkiewicz, Stephen Wood, and Bernard McCaughey won for the Ormeau Road side, Paddy Maguire won for the visitors, and Martin Donaghy and Paul Hanna drew. Second-placed QUB won by a similar margin against the Fruithill Falcons, despite Sean Linton's (1266) win over Cathan Gormley (1546) and Paul Logan's (990) draw with Vincent Crean (1259). Last but not least, Steven Eachus, Alan McConnell and James O'Fee secured the bonus points for Bangor 1 as they narrowly beat Strand 2.

Division 3

  • Fruithill Ravens 2-3 Bangor 2
  • Strand 3 2.5-2.5 QUB 3
  • Strand 4 4.5-0.5 Ballynafeigh 3

Leaders QUB 3 could only manage a draw away to Strand 3, although newcomer Ali Abdelkreem showed promise in his win over Aaditya Singh. Peter McFarland also won for the visitors, while Ranjit Singh and Taufik Kamal won for the Holywood Road side and the game between Dexter Harris and Jamie Corscadden ended in a draw. Bangor 2 ate into the students' lead with a 3-2 win at the Fruithill Ravens. Jonny Brown, Tony Redden and Gary Johnston secured the bonus points for Bangor 2. Ballynafeigh 3 appear to be super-glued to the foot of Division 3 as they could only field three players against Strand 4, falling to a 4.5-0.5 defeat.
