The Belfast Qualifier for the London Junior Chess Championship

The new school year starts and we have our first monthly tournament. The London Junior Chess Championship (LJCC). An opportunity for the younger players to qualify for the LJCC finals - one of the most prestigious tournaments.

The tournament is open to all young chess players. The more players that play the more different age group sections we can have. The plan is to have sections for Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 19. Unfortunately on the day I felt due to numbers we would merge groups. So we had 12 players in an Under 12 section and 9 players in the Under 19 section. The players included Ulster Champions Pheobe Patterson, Calvin Patterson, Daniil Zelenchuk, Dexter Harris who also is the winner of the Munster under 8 tournament and Avrora Zelenchuk winner of the English Chess Championships Northern Giga-final under8's. So plenty of strong players.

Both sections played a 6 round swiss - so all players get to play for the day. The time between rounds was spent playing friendlys and solving problems for a problem solving competition. A couple of coaching sessions where chess positions were talked through with tactical pins as the topic - these reflected the theme of some of the chess problems.

Of course starting with the most important job of the day - the puzzle solving - each game of chess is a series of puzzles here are some elegent positions some are works of art... One of the best ways of improving your chess.
