Muldoons 1 edge ahead

(B&D League Week 15) After handily beating Ballynafeigh 2, plus a win in a rescheduled match against QUB 1, champions Muldoons 1 have overtaken Silver King rivals Ballynafeigh 1.

Division 1

  • Muldoons 1 4-1 Ballynafeigh 2
  • The A Team 1.5-3.5 QUB 1
  • Muldoons 1 3.5-1.5 QUB 1

After seeing off Ballynafeigh 2 in a match where only Bunratty Challengers winner Mikhail Pavlov was able to prevent a whitewash by beating Gareth Annesley, the Corporation Square side faced third-placed QUB 1, who were fresh off a 3.5-1.5 win over The A Team, the two sides met in a rescheduled match from Week 12. The defending champions moved into a 1.5 point lead by beating the university side 3.5-1.5, with wins for Stephen Morgan over Ulster Champion Stephen Rush and Danny Mallaghan over Ian Woodfield, with the other three games ending in draws.

Division 2

  • QUB 2 4.5-0.5 Fruithill
  • Ballynafeigh 3 4.5-0.5 Ballynafeigh 4
  • Civil Service 2.5-2.5 Kelly's Heroes
  • Bangor Webbs 3-2 Muldoons 2
  • Ballynafeigh 3 3-2 Fruithill

Uncharacteristically for what has been a very evenly-matched division, this week featured two 4.5-0.5 hammerings - QUB 2 beating Fruithill and Ballynafeigh 3 over Ballynafeigh 4, although neither of the losing sides fielded their strongest line-ups.  A four-man Civil Service side drew with Kelly's Heroes thanks to Mark Newman's win over David Ruben, as well as a couple of surprise draws for David Jackson (1269) and Jim McLean (1112) against Richard Gould (1536) and Bernard Jaffa (1367) respectively. The Bangor Webbs notched a 3-2 win over Muldoons 2, but will have been disappointed not to have won by a greater margin as Alan McConnell (1687) and Mike McKimm (1394) were held to draws by John Wood (1478) and Rodney Orr (1080) respectively. Finally, in a rescheduled match from Week 10, Ballynafeigh 3 extended their lead at the top of the division to 12.5 points with a 3-2 win over Fruithill.

  • Ballynafeigh 6 3-2 QUB 4

QUB 3's lead is now 34.5 points after a 4-1 win over bottom side Ballynafeigh 7, with only a slip-up from Rian Mellotte against Nick Todd denying the students a whitewash. Ballynafeigh 6 beat QUB 4 in the week's other match, with Andy Boal getting his first league win in his third attempt against PJ Mallon as Pawel Otocki and Charlie Logan also won.
