Ballynafeigh 3 stun Kelly's Heroes to open up Division 2 lead

(B&D League 2016/17 Week 5) Ballynafeigh 3 are emerging as the clear leaders in Division 2 after dominating a strong Kelly's Heroes team. Meanwhile in Division 1, it remains tight at the top as QUB 1 and Ballynafeigh 1 shared the points.

QUB 1 remain two points ahead after drawing with nearest rivals Ballynafeigh 1. With three draws on the top three boards, QUB's Callum Ormerod beat John Bradley and Damien Lavery defeated Ram Rajan for the visitors. The other scheduled match of the week between The A Team and Muldoons 1, was postponed.

Ballynafeigh 3 grew their lead at the top to 7.5 points after a spectacular performance against a Kelly's Heroes team that outrated them by over 100 points per board. The Zelenchuks on boards 4 and 5 delivered two fantastic results - father Dmitry (1185) beat Craig Stevenson (1402) on board 5, while son Daniil (1170) pulled off the upset of the week in defeating Paul Hanna (1521). Norman McFarland salvaged the Malone Road side's only half-point as he drew with Edward Doak. Adrian Dornford-Smith and Geoff Hindley both overcame 200+ point ratings disadvantages to help Civil Service to a 3.5-1.5 victory against Muldoons 2, and a strong Fruithill side prevailed against Ballynafeigh 4. The match between QUB 2 and the Bangor Webbs was postponed.

QUB 3 already appear to have one hand on the Division 3 plate - they are now 12 points ahead after a crushing win over Ballynafeigh 5. Unrated players Martin Beregszasi, Cathan Gormley and Ciara Pugh all claimed victory against players rated 1000+. The contest between Ballynafeigh 7 and QUB 4 was much closer, although the visitors were a player short.
