Champions stumble against QUB

(B&D League 2016/17 Week 1) Muldoons 1 got their Silver King defence off to a poor start as they were beaten by QUB 1, while Ballynafeigh 1 are the early leaders after beating Ballynafeigh 2.

It doesn't seem like that long ago when Muldoons 1 beat Ballynafeigh 1 in a thrilling final-day showdown to claim the 2015/16 Silver King, but another season of the Belfast and District League is already underway. Nineteen teams will battle it out in three divisions from now until April. Here's how the first week unfolded:

Division 1

  • Muldoons 1 2-3 QUB 1
  • Ballynafeigh 2 1-4 Ballynafeigh 1

QUB 1 demonstrated that they will be a force to reckoned with as they defeated champions Muldoons 1, including a win for John Masterson who has moved to Queens from the Corporation Square outfit since last season. Ballynafeigh 1 beat Ballynafeigh 2, while The A Team get their campaign underway next week.

  • QUB 2 2.5-2.5 Fruithill
  • Civil Service 0.5-4.5 Kelly's Heroes
  • Bangor Webbs 2.5-2.5 Muldoons 2

Kelly's Heroes look as if they will be very difficult to stop as they swept aside a Civil Service side containing Mark Newman and new arrival Paul McGuigan. Ballynafeigh 3 claimed a narrow win over Ballynafeigh 4, while the other four teams were all involved in draws.
