Muldoons get QUB revenge to gain on leaders

(B&D League 2016/17 Week 6) An exciting three-way title race is brewing in Division 1 as Muldoons 1 made amends for their Week 1 defeat to QUB 1 to propel themselves back into title contention. In Division 2, Ballynafeigh 3 and QUB 2 drew their top-of-the-table clash while QUB 3 continue to steamroll Division 3.

Division 1

  • Ballynafeigh 1 4-1 Ballynafeigh 2
  • QUB 1 1.5-3.5 Muldoons 1

Muldoons 1 are just 4.5 points off the lead (with a match in hand) after beating QUB 1, who they had lost to in the opening week, 3.5-1.5. Nicholas Pilkiewicz defeated Ulster Champion Stephen Rush and Danny Mallaghan beat Callum Ormerod, with draws in the other three games. Elsewhere, Ballynafeigh 1 are the new leaders with a 4-1 win over Ballynafeigh 2.

  • Muldoons 2 3-2 Fruithill
  • Kelly's Heroes 2-3 Ballynafeigh 4

First met second as Ballynafeigh 3 and QUB 2 met on Monday night. The visitors brought a stronger team, on average, but for the third week in a row Daniil Zelenchuk (1170) defeated a higher-rated opponent as he saw off the challenge of Bernard McCaughey (1383). The home side's other win came courtesy of Ross Harris over new arrival Fawaz Alkhateeb, while Milad Foozoni and Ram Rajan secured wins for QUB 2. The two sides split the points after Samuel Ngieng held Brendan Jamison to a draw. Meanwhile, the title challenge of Kelly's Heroes seems to be juddering to a halt after a loss to Ballynafeigh 4, who were 228-point per board underdogs. The stand-out performances came from Iza Bujak (1200), who held Paul Hanna (1521) to a draw, and Garhy Aboelsoud (1185) who claimed the upset of the week as he beat Richard Gould (1546). In a week of close matches, Muldoons 2 beat Fruithill 3-2 while Civil Service beat the Bngor Webbs by the same score.
