Children Battle to become Ulster Champion 2016/17

Young Chess enthusiasts gathered at Methodist College on 10th December to see who could be Ulster Champion....

With youngsters coming from as far away as Derry, we had a good turn out for this years Uster Championship.

The Secondary section included Stormont prize winners, John Dawson, Jake Patterson, Hannah Patterson and Daniil Zelenchuk who has played in the Chess League for top club Ballynfeigh leading the second division. So the standard was high and the fight would be tough.

In the Primary section we have amoung the players - Calvin Patterson, Dexter Harris, Pheobe Patterson and Calum Glendinning all tough players.

Both sections had new players which is always exciting to have. We had a new group from Wellington College. Regulars from Bangor Grammar and students from St Malachy's, Friends School, Holywood Rudolf Steiner School, Royal School Armagh, Seaview Primary School, Strandtown Primary School, St Brides Primary School, Fullerton House, Oakgrove Primary School (Derry). and as always a brilliant group of home educated youngsters.

With 31 students a decision had to be made as to how to split the age groups into sections . The players were split into two sections. (with more players we might have more sections),

The Under12 group had 14 players whilst the Under19 group had 17 players. The initial plan was to have everyone playing 6 round swiss. But with the younger group completing each round quite fast - we changed it so that we played as many rounds as possible - starting the next round shortly after the last round had finished. This led to a tournament with 8 rounds. The Seniors were given clocks and each player 25mins and 6 rounds were played = 3 before lunch and 3 after.

As usual we had a puzzle compeition with trophies and certificates.

The puzzles lead to discussions on chess and sometimes co-operative problem solving and some of the problems are pure works of art.

Three players on equal points at the top of the score board - Some discussion was had about the method of deciding the overall winner. With Daniil Zelenchuk keen on a quick play off. It was decided that we would use same method as the Ulster Seniors - Medium Buchan, Buchan and progressive.

Buchholtz is the sum of your opponents scores, Medium Buchholtz is the same but the top score and lowest score arent included. Progressive is the cumulative sum of your own scores (so the early you gain points the more the progressive score is).

Vincent Crean (St Malachys) was announced as the Ulster Champion.

The winner of the Silver Platter for top Girl went for the successive year to Hannah Patterson (Home Educated).

We were lucky to have on hand to asist with the running of the tournament and to pass on the Ulster Championship trophy to Vincent, last years Champion Andrew Todd - who is playing board one for his University team - Aberdeen. Andrew was key to bringing youngsters into the Ulster Chess Union league in the last couple of years.

Many thanks to the players for such a brilliant day of chess. Thanks also to the Parents for bringing and supporting their youngsters. Thanks to the volunteers for making the day possible and thanks to Methodist College for the excellent venue.

See you all at our next event - The Childrens Chess Saturday January 14th 12:30pm - 5:00pm Methodist College.

Parents enjoying their own chess game - trying to keep up with their youngsters!
