On Thursday 20th April, Bangor Chess Club hosted a simultaneous challenge match featuring David Houston and Michael Sheerin.
Bangor Simultaneous 2017

Michael Sheerin and David Houston

David Houston played against a 12 man team from Bangor and Michael played against a 10 man team from Belfast (some late withdrawals led to the player imbalance). The result would be decided by a points percentage. As usual the hospitality from Bangor was impeccable and the match was played in a friendly atmosphere with plenty of refreshments on hand. The teams were as follows -

There were lots of exciting games with attacking chess, complicated middle games and daring sacrifices. Michael Sheerin scored a respectable 5.5 / 10 against very strong opposition, giving him a final score of 55%. Michael scored wins against Billy, Paul, Vincent, and Ronan. He also managed draws against Dennis, Mikhail and Nick. However, the winner of the match was former Ulster Champion David Houston who scored an incredible 11 / 12 with a final score of 92%. David was unbeaten, however James O'Fee and Ross Harris managed to earn hard fought draws, James possibly missing a chance for a win.

Many thanks to Michael Sheerin and Bangor Chess Club for organising a fun and successful night.
