Ballynafeigh 1 just about prevail in close scrap with The A Team

(B&D League 2016/17 Week 13) Ballynafeigh 1 continued their title challenge with a win over The A Team, but the bottom side put up some stiff resistance.

Division 1

  • Ballynafeigh 1 3-2 The A Team
  • Ballynafeigh 2 1-4 QUB 1

Leaders Ballynafeigh 1 were given an unexpectedly difficult time by bottom-placed The A Team. In recent weeks they have had to field weaker players on board 5 as a result of Calum Leitch going on hiatus from chess; while last week this allowed for James Barbour's exploits against Ballynafeigh 2's Chris Kelly, this week John Price found himself outmatched by Bobby Thompson. John Bryars claimed a good win against Damien Cunningham, but otherwise the games went according to the ratings. The A Team gained ground on Ballynafeigh 2, who lost 4-1 at home to QUB 1. On board 5, Chris Kelly (1552) suffered his second major upset in as many weeks, losing to Liam Ferris (1247). The home side's sole point came from Eoin Carey, who saw off Ian Woodfield with a scintillating attacking performance.

Although Mark Seidman (1415) pulled off a shock win over Ross Harris (1743) the home side were in full control on the other four boards.Nearest rivals QUB 2 beat Muldoons 2 3-2, while Civil Service moved up to third with a decisive win over a much weaker than usual Ballynafeigh 4.

The scheduled match between Kelly's Heroes and Fruithill was postponed.
