QUB sit atop Division 1 after A Team annihilation

(B&D League 2016/17 Week 4) A convincing win for QUB 1 over The A Team puts them on top of Division 1 for the time being.

Division 1

  • Muldoons 1 3-2 Ballynafeigh 2
  • QUB 1 4-1 The A Team

With Ballynafeigh 1 not in action this week, the new leaders of DIvision 1 are QUB 1 who beat The A Team 4-1. Ray Devenney and Sam Flanagan achieved draws on the top two boards for the visitors, but QUB 1's greater strength on the lower boards decided the outcome as Stephen Rush, Callum Ormerod and Ian Woodfield won their games. Elsewhere, both Mikhail Pavlov and Robert Lavery had their opponents, Gareth Annesley and Nicholas Pilkiewicz respectively, under serious pressure in a Muldoons 1 vs Ballynafeigh 2 match that went right down to the wire, but Pavlov hung a piece and Pilkiewicz's own attack broke through first, giving the champions a narrow win.

  • Civil Service 3-2 QUB 2
  • Kelly's Heroes 4.5-0.5 Bangor Webbs

Ballynafeigh 3 extended their lead at the top of Division 2 to 1.5 points with a 4-1 win over Fruithill. Ross Harris, Daniil Zelenchuk and Dmitry Zelenchuk won for the visitors, with draws in the other two games. QUB 2 slip down to third place after a 3-2 defeat to Civil Service, who finally seem to be playing at the level they're capable of after a disastrous start to the season. Kelly's Heroes are now in second place after demolishing a four-man Bangor Webbs side 4.5-0.5, with Walter Wilson (1480) getting the visitors' only half-point in a good performance against Graeme McCormick (1712). In the other Division 2 match this week, Ballynafeigh 4 defeated Muldoons 2 thanks to wins from Paul McNaughton, Chris Black and Garhy Aboelsoud.
