Ballynafeigh 1 reassert title challenge with blowout at the Bankers' Club

(B&D League 2016/17 - Week 18) Trailing Muldoons 1 by eight points with a match in hand, Ballynafeigh 1 needed a big win over bottom-placed The A Team - which is exactly what they got.

Division 1

  • QUB 1 3.5-1.5 Ballynafeigh 2
  • The A Team 0.5-4.5 Ballynafeigh 1

With leaders Muldoons 1 having a free week, Ballynafeigh 1 had a chance to put some pressure on the defending champions - a chance they took in style as they hammered The A Team 4.5-0.5. David Houston, Steve Scannell, John Bradley and Damien Lavery all won for the visitors, with only Alan Thomason giving up a half-point to Bruce Maclean. Ballynafeigh 2 were a player short against QUB 1 and went down 3.5-1.5, although Eoin Carey (1630) achieved a creditable win over Callum Ormerod (1759), claiming the upset of the week after a piece sacrifice went awry.

Division 2

  • Muldoons 2 1-4 Civil Service
  • Ballynafeigh 3 3.5-1.5 Kelly's Heroes
  • Ballynafeigh 4 1-4 Fruithill

Ballynafeigh 3 extended their lead with a comfortable win over Kelly's Heroes. Once again, it was the Zelenchuks who did the damage for the home side, with Daniil beating Bernard Jaffa and Dmitry beating Craig Stevenson. Muldoons 2 were no match for Civil Service as the Stormont-based side's superior strength in depth took its toll. Bottom side Ballynafeigh 4 lost heavily to Fruithill, while QUB 2 vs Bangor Webbs was postponed.
