March 10th saw some brilliant chess at Methodist College
This is the second to last in the series of Childrens Chess Tournaments that contribute to the Grandprix. Winners of the Grandprix are invited to Stormont for an award ceremony and elite tournament. With the standings available it looked like we got some competition in the puzzle solving as this is included in the Grandprix.
Thanks to the volunteers for running the tournament. The afternoon is full of good chess, complex endgames, silly mistakes and a little chat! - all newcomers welcome.
The puzzle solving encourages chat about chess of the type if you do this then what happens ... Which is a fun way of improving your chess and get thinking about planning moves. The puzzles also are examples of what can happen in actual play. Each player handing in a puzzle sheet gets it returned at the end of the competition with a certificate.
The winner of the Secondary section was Samuel Todd

We were located in the Canteen - which provided plenty of space but was a little cold. We continued the idea of playing one section giving the younger players an opportunity to play the older ones.
We played as many rounds as we could. With an odd number of players Geoff Hindley played a friendly game against the player with the Bye providing some informal coaching.
With the start of each round theres a hush of quiet concentration.
