Fruithill end Kelly's Heroes 100% record

(B&D League 2017/18 Week 5) The Malone Road side's perfect start to the season was brought to a juddering halt at Fruithill as they were finally beaten. Also, in Division 1 there was a default that could have significant implications for the title race.

Division 1

  • Ballynafeigh 1 0-5 Muldoons 1 (forfeit)
  • Ballynafeigh 2 2-3 Civil Service
  • The A Team 0.5-4.5 Strand 2

Muldoons 1 widened their lead at the top of Division 1 after their planned fixture with Ballynafeigh 1, expected to be a hotly-contested match between two of the strongest teams in the league, had to be cancelled at the last minute owing to the unavailability of the home side's venue. Behind them are Strand 2, who came close to whitewashing The A Team despite being rating underdogs on four of the five boards, and Civil Service, who were given a close match but ultimately prevailed against an under-strength Ballynafeigh 2 team.

Strand 2 3 13
Civil Service 3 12
Strand 1 2 11.5
Ballynafeigh 1 2 6

The A Team 4 3

Division 2

  • Fruithill 3.5-1.5 Kelly's Heroes
  • Fruithill Ravens 0.5-4.5 Ballynafeigh 3
  • Strand 4 3-2 Strand 3
  • Ballynafeigh 4 P-P Bangor

Going into this week, Kelly's Heroes were leading Division 2 with a perfect 21 points from three matches, but they had done so by feeding on the division's minnows. The time had come to find out how they would fare in the shark tank of Fruithill Bowling Club. The home side had some big sharks at their disposal, too, with Ciaran Marron (1727) and Neil Fisher (1650) being easily the two highest-rated players in the match. The latter fell victim to the upset of the week against Bernard Jaffa (1351) but the rest of the team delivered a big result, indicating that an exciting title chase is in store. Ballynafeigh 3 easily defeated the Fruithill Ravens, with their unrated board 2 Jim Kyle moving to 2/2 for his B&D League career with a win over Ross Smith (953) - he could well be a player to watch. Strand 4 narrowly defeated Strand 3, while the scheduled match between Ballynafeigh 4 and Bangor was postponed.
