Double blow for Hungarian Chess

#36 "Rookie": Irish News 21st December 1983

Hungarian Chess suffered a double blow with the tragic death of grandmaster Janos Flesch in a car crash in Kent, and with the defeat of Zoltan Ribli by Russia's Vassily Smyslov in the World Championship semi-final in London. In their second game below, Ribli has a rare win. Gary Kasparov trounced Victor Korchnoi in the other match.

After Xmas, from December 30 to January 2, Fortwilliam Golf Club is the venue for the Ulster Senior Championship (1800+). There are seven rounds (of chess, not golf) with evening adjournment and entries should be made to John Orchin, 9 Killeaton Park, Dunmurry (Tel. 622178). I shall be going to Cork for the Mulcahy Memorial Tournament between December 29 and January 1. (£1,000 prize-money: ring Pat Constant, Cork 43629), where "chess-nuts" will be "boasting" over an open fire about their games.
