City of Dublin Congress Results

#21 "Rookie": Irish News 21st September 1983

It was remiss of me to have left out of last week's report of the City of Dublin Congress the actual winners of the four tournaments.

P. Whitehead may have "left his heart in San Francisco" but not the art of winning, in this case, his seventh title in a row. The Senior title was shared by North and South in the shape of D. Blair and C. Quinn. C. Bracken was not even "bracken" into a sweat to win the Intermediate while Dublin's B. Lyons "roared" to success in the Junior.

Today's game from the Senior event shows the strength of a pair of bishops, even though a pawn down.

The next two tournaments are:

  • the one-day Bangor Congress on Saturday, 24th September at the Winston Hotel (phone Jim Montgomery at Bangor 63554);
  • and the four-day Williamson Shield at Queen's University Studentś Union (phone David Houston at Belfast 660620). Its six rounds will be held on Friday, 30th September at 7:30 pm, Saturday, 1st October at 10:00 am and 2:30pm and at the same times the following weekend.

Finally, entries for teams to the three Belfast and District Leagues should be sent to John Orchin, 9 Killeaton Park, Dunmurry. The new Civil Service Chess Club meets on Wednesdays at Maynard Sinclair Pavilion, Stormont.

Any civil servant keen to join this first new club for many years should ring George Nelis at Belfast 798993.
