World & Ulster Schools Championships
The World Chess Championship semi-finals are building up to a dramatic climax as we approach Christmas. At the moment two Soviet players, Gary Kasparov and Vassily Smyslov, appear favourites to reach the final play-off, which determines the challenger to World Campion Anatoly Karpov next year. 20-year old Kasparov can spare no mercy as he only leads defector Victor Korchnoi 4½-3½ in the best of 12 games. 62-year old, ex-world champion Smyslov smiles often as he leads Zoltan Ribli, hungry for vcitory, bt 5-3.
