World & Ulster Schools Championships

#35 "Rookie": Irish News 14th December 1983

The World Chess Championship semi-finals are building up to a dramatic climax as we approach Christmas. At the moment two Soviet players, Gary Kasparov and Vassily Smyslov, appear favourites to reach the final play-off, which determines the challenger to World Campion Anatoly Karpov next year. 20-year old Kasparov can spare no mercy as he only leads defector Victor Korchnoi 4½-3½ in the best of 12 games. 62-year old, ex-world champion Smyslov smiles often as he leads Zoltan Ribli, hungry for vcitory, bt 5-3.

Back home, budding young players can seek their own glory by sending their entries to Mr. B.L.Thorpe at Methodist College, Malone Road, Belfast for one of the following Ulster Schools Championships at Methody:

  • Boys and girls, if under 13 on 1/9/83, can enter the Minor, held on two Saturdays, 7 and 14 January.
  • Girls under 14 can enter the Junior School Girls on 7 January
  • While the Senior Girls takes place on 27 and 28 January.

Today's game features two of our best players of the younger generation in a Kingside onslaught. Count McCormick's crushing Kingside pawn moves - there are eight in all.
