North's players win chess honours

Welcome to our first ever chess column, which will take a weekly look at the Irish chess scene, featuring a chess game for you to browse through.

Last month, no less than seven of our 12 Northern players came back with prizes from the Castlebar St. Patrick's Chess Festival. E.O'Hare (Derry) won the intermediate section, with P.Carton (Newcastle) and A. Waterman (Coleraine) joint second. A. Burns (CIYMS) shared the junior title, while F. Kelly (Derry) and P. Carton Jnr (Newcastle)won the novices' title. In the following game from the Castlebar junior tournament, note how dangerous a gambit opening can be.
