Irish Chess Championship
Over 200 chess players took part in the I.B.M. Irish Chess Championship held in Castlebar from 9-17 July. David Dunne, FIDE Master, is this year's Irish Champion while inevitably American Paul Whitehead won his fifth title, the Western Weekender Senior. Northern success was limited to Pat Carton, joint Intermediate Champion, Roger Beckett and Philip Moclair, joint third in the Weekender Junior and Dara Carton, second in the Junior reserves. Alan Gilmore was second on 3½ out of 4, before losing in the last 2 rounds of the Weekender Senior. Playing this week in our Glorney Cup team in Carmarthen, Wales, Niall Carton won his place by successes like the game below in the Inter-provincial, after which he said "I won, but Mee lost"
