Downpatrick Chess Congress
Chess has one-day and three-day events. After three consecutive one-day tournaments, it makes a welcome change for the more leisurely player to find that the Gateway Building Society is generously sponsoring the Downpatrick Chess Congress to be held in the Teachers' Centre, Mount Crescent on Friday 29th-Sunday 31 July:
- the Open - unrestricted entry, £7
- the Intermediate - under 1700, £6
- and the Major - under 1350 £5
with half-price for under 16 and over 60. For further details, ring M. Stone (Downpatrick 2870) or J. Murray (Ardglass 841310) after 6:00 pm.
Next season, we may be gaining by the return of one of our best young players, Keith Allen, who graduated with a B.Sc. (Maths) from Warwick University but losing Hon Tsang who won a scholarship to Oxbridge (or is it Camford?),. Chessplayers may not need to be academically clever, but it certainly helps.
This weeks game features 2 players who have appeared before in this column but make no "bones" about it, they have threatened "muttony" if I write any more about them.
