Double Trouble at Groomsport Chess Tournament
Another report from our intrepid reporter and chess organiser - Brendan Jamison:
24 locals were paired up to form 12 teams with one senior level and one junior level player. With 12 minutes each on the clock, 5 rounds of chess fun unfolded. The top rated players were faced off against the other higher rated opponents, whilst their junior partners duelled with each other.
In a closely fought race, James O’Fee and Sam Bowman were crowned champions with an impressive 7.5/10. Both of these players have been lining their trophy cabinets with awards in 2019 so no surprises they performed brilliantly as a duo.
Second place went to Richard Proctor and Owen Wilson with 7/10, a dream team that delivered many excellent wins. Third place, also finishing on 7/10, was awarded to Gary Johnston and Richard McClean, with the latter remaining undefeated with 5 wins in a row!
The club was delighted to see Craig Kelly make a welcome return to competitive chess, drawing his first round bout with 13 year old Callum Magennis. Meanwhile, the female players were also out in force this week as 16 year old Ellen Eachus was crushing her male opposition whilst her sister Rachel was paired up with dad Steven. Rebecca McClurg also played some excellent chess as did newcomer Rory McQuillan, playing in his first ever tournament. Bangor Team Captain Mike McKimm enjoyed spectating with his eight year old son Kyle who also had some fun friendly games with the other youngsters.
Welcoming players of all ages and all abilities, the club is looking forward to the next speed chess tournament in May. Come and stare at a chequered square!
