Bangor St Patrick's Day Rapidplay

Bangor Chess Club held a St Patrick's day Rapidplay on 17th March. With some 26 players.

Tournament Report - 17/03/2022

26 players competed in the St. Patrick’s Day Rapid at Bangor Chess Club on Thursday 17th March 2022. The club purchased new DGT clocks this season but was still two short for this event which had been oversubscribed. The club was only able to take the extra players thanks to a loan of two clocks from Greenisland FC Chess Club. Sincere thanks to Chris Dorrian for helping out and for sending 4 players from GFC.

Mandar Tahmankar (5.5/6) won the tournament with an unbeaten record, drawing only one game to 16 year old Calum Glendinning (4/6) who scooped the award for ‘Best Young Player’. Second place went to Adam Rushe (4.5/6) and Gerard Obasi (4/6) won third place on tie-breaks. Other players finishing on 4 points included Ethan Cole, Ranjit Singh and Aaditya Singh. Meanwhile Shubham Srivastav (4/6) from Mumbai won the ‘Best Newcomer’ trophy.
11 year old Jamaican player Joshua Smikle (3.5/6) won the ‘Rising Star’ medal after delivering many impressive wins in his first tournament in Northern Ireland. His parents drove him all the way from Enniskillen so he could compete. Such a polite and well-mannered player, Joshua is bursting with talent and we look forward to seeing him again at future chess events.
Jennifer Worbey won the 3rd place medal in the female band, with her daughter Leah Worbey winning the 2nd place trophy. It was great having them both at the tournament, their first ever time competing in Groomsport. Teenage chess sensation Anjali Singh was crowned female champion with several impressive wins to stay one point ahead of her nearest rivals for the title.
The next blitz event is at Strand Chess Club on Friday 8th April, 8 rounds of 5+3, from 7pm to 9:45pm. Details to be be uploaded to the UCU site shortly. £6 entry fee. Register to Ross Harris at strandchessclub@gmail.com
