Stephen Scannell Simultaneous Display

Bangor Chess Club entertained STEPHEN SCANNELL, three-times Ulster Chess Champion, on Thursday 27 February. The American-born Champion gave a simultaneous display on 18 boards, beginning at 8 p.m. and ending at 11.15 p.m.
In the earlier part of the evening, Mr Scannell faced tough opposition on many boards; but in the later stages his superior skill won through in several endgames. The American’s final tally was; won 9, lost 4, drawn 5.
Those who won their games against Mr Scannell were James O’Fee (Bangor), David McAlister (Hillsborough), Damien Lavery (Royal Victoria Hospital) and the promising schoolboy David Grzymek (Sullivan Upper).
Those who drew their games were Alan McConnell, Kenny Browne, Philip Todd and Richard Proctor (all Bangor), and Paul McLoughlin (Royal Victoria Hospital). Others taking part were Mark Seidman, Ron Henderson, Owen Wilson, Richard Morrow, Gary Johnston, Chris Kelly, and Kenneth Nicholl (all Bangor); and the Symington brothers, David and Stephen, (RBAI).
