Schools Out

#9 "Rookie": Irish News 30th June 1983

Schools are out for Summer, so end-of-term reports on school chess is appropriate. Top of the class must be St Mary's Grammar School, Belfast who won Division 3 and 6 and First Form. In Division 1, its team of K McCann, G. Kelly, D. Haughey, M. McLaughlin, C. McGarrigle and J. Lonsdale finished third. Also K. McCann and G. Kelly were joint third in the Ulster Senior Schoolboy's behind St Colman's, Newry's Niall Carton and RBAI's Hon Tsang and so were just pipped for selection by Niall and Hon for next months international Glorney Cup in Wales.

St. Malachy's College, Belfast has had a lean year brightened only by Gerard McIlroy winning the Junior title at the Belfast May Festival. St. Colman's, Strabane won the North West league, Dominican College, Belfast shared the Senior Girls Division and St. Peter's, Belfast were third in Division 4.

This weeks game features Keven McCann's win over William Ginn and a tonic it proved as he was third in the Ulster Senior.
