Winter Tournament 2020 final results

With 22 weeks of play and some brilliant chess. We have our final round and the results of this years Winter tournament. A fun rapidplay tournament will be run this last Monday of March followed by a Zoom closing ceremony.

The 22nd week of the Winter tournament which has been running every Monday evening since 19th October has played its final week.

The usual 3 week rule kicks in at the end of the tournament. Interestingly alot of the regular players had played most weeks and alot were exempt as they had played 14 or more games.

Rules
1. Players must complete 10 games to be considered to qualify.
2. If a player does not play in two of the last three rounds they will be assumed to have played and lost 2 games. If they play only one then they will forfeit one game.
3. However if a player has played 14 or more games then they are exempt from rule 2.
4. Scores will be calculated on a percentage basis.

The Penalty column below only applies to players statisfying 10 or more games. It appears only one person failed to play the 2 out of 3 games.

We award places to the top 2 players with the highest % overall in the tournament. Then we have a rule that you cant be awarded more than one award. We take the remaining players and award 1st place within the sections.

So

Overall Champion : Danny Roberts (85.7%) - a briliant result

Overall 2nd : Michael Hood (70.6%) - an excellent result against tough opposition

Section 1 Winner : Alex Goss (50%) - a very tough section.

Section 2 Winner : Chris Armstrong (61.4%) - a tough battle against Adrian Dornford-Smith and also having to play up a section at times.

Section 3 Winner : David Corr (52.4%) - with some excellent results.

Also certifcates go for most attendances:

We played for 22 weeks and the following attended all the weeks:

Chris Armstrong and David Corr.

I want a to give a big thankyou to all the players who played and made this event possible. Its the playing, the facing an opponent on a blank slate where anything could happen. Holding ones breath and diving in and facing the challenging positions with creative, focused concentration and battling to the end with honesty integrity and the sheer pleasure of the battle. Friends at the start and friends at the end. An event of creation, mistakes, missing-things, hoping for missed things, attacks, defences and plans. Thank you all for enabling such pleasure and fun in these difficult times.

This Monday March 29th will see a 5 round quickplay tournament of 10mins on each players clock. Followed by the Zoom closing ceremony (invites will be sent out on monday evening).

Monday March 29th Timetable:
