Scannell claims Williamson Shield

Steve Scannell claimed his fifth Williamson Shield win while Richard Proctor won the subsidiary Challengers event.

Steve Scannell scored 5pts from 6 games to claim outright the 2005 renewal of the WIlliamson Shield from stiff competition. 4 wins and 2 draws added up to some intense chess over the weekend for Steve with each match going the full distance, 18 hours over-the-board gameplay. Struggling under time-pressure, as only winners can, Steve secured his fifth WIlliamson title. He had previously won in 1998, 2001, 2003 (tied with Tom Clarke) and 2004.

In a tournament featuring his "best game ever", Richard Proctor gave up us usual "sac till they drop" strategy and played normally for a change. Could this explain Richard's success claiming the Junior title? Richard too faced difficult competition with Steve Eachus bowing out in the final round as runner-up.
