Glorney Cup Fund Tournament

While the chess season has not yet fully begun, the second Glorney Cup Fund One-day tournament at Queen’s University Students' Union marked a successful pipe-opener. The big question everyone was asking was how would the Gillen brothers fare after picking up the British Under-12 and Under-13 title in Plymouth

In the last round of the Open, Stephen Gillen faced former Glorney Cup player Howard Beckett on Board One while twin brother Adrian played the recent winner of the Soanes All—Play—All at the British Championships in Plymouth, Martin Kelly. In between, Cambridge University player Hon Tsang squared up against Greg Jackson. Stephen clinched the draw he needed to secure first place on tiebreak on 5/6 from Hon Tsang, who beat Jackson, and his own brother, Adrian, who cleverly exploited Kelly’s inexplicable failure to capture a gambit pawn in the French Advanced.

Joint fourth on 4.5 points were Howard Beckett and John McKenna.

In the Novices Under—1200, which, in recent tournaments, has been an unqualified success in attracting new blood to chess events, 22 keen players fought it out for first place; although not a complete 100 per cent success, but a "parte" success for Colin Parte (Banger); he only took the title on tiebreak on 5/6 from Stephen Shaw (Newtownards), with evergreen Sam Cree (Fords) on 4.5 in third, the same score as age prize winner Ken Yuen (Methody).

For details of the next one—day tournament at the Winston Hotel, Bangor, on Saturday, September 23, ring R. Henderson (at 852320).
