Chess champs bring cup to North
Five young Newcastle lads have become all-Ireland chess champions. They swept to victory in the finals of the Community Games chess championships held at Mosney, bringing the cup North for the first time.
The winning team pictured above, are (from left) Niall Campbell, (13), Patrick Carton (12), Dara Carton (10), Philip Moclair (13) and Niall Carton (14) who was captain.
After winning the Ulster section the boys went on to beat Kildare for Leinster, Cork for Munster and Castlebar, for Connaught.
Dara and Niall are brothers and last night their father Pat said he was very pleased at his sons' victory.
"There is no competition for them round here anymore," he said. "Niall is Ulster Schools Champion and captain of the inter-provincial team, so he has done very well so far."
