Sam Livingston RIP

Samantha Scott, daughter of Sam Livingston, has informed us that her father died suddenly on Saturday 1st August 2020 at the age of 93.

Sam was probably best known for his connection to Newtownards Chess Club. He also provided significant service to the Ulster Chess Union, both as a committee member and tournament organiser. The accompanying photograph of Sam and his wife Phyllis, together with former Irish and Ulster champion, Ray Devenney (left) and the late Alex Beckett (right), long-time Ulster Chess Union Secretary, was taken at the 1989 UCU Annual Dinner.

HIs proudest memory of his time playing chess was achieving a draw against the legendary Soviet player and defector, Viktor Korchnoi, at a simultaneous display in Newtownards Town Hall on 4th February 1981.

The Ulster Chess Union would like to extend its sincere condolences to Sam's family.
