The Silver King

The official title of the Trophy awarded to the winner of Division 1 of the UCU Belfast & District Leagues is the Ulster Trophy, but it is generally referred to as the Silver King.

The Belfast News-Letter chess column for the 30th November 1893 announced that a new competition had been inaugurated to be competed for by various chess clubs of the city and some of the neighbouring clubs. The entries in the first season were from the Belfast, Holywood, Strandtown and Victoria clubs. The committee of the Belfast Chess Club presented a perpetual trophy for the winners of the competition. That trophy, officially called the "Ulster Trophy" but generally known as the "Silver King", is still competed for by the Division 1 teams of the UCU Belfast and District Leagues.
