Chess in Newry gets a start

As part of its outreach programme, Bangor Chess Club is lending equipment and support to a children’s arts centre in Newry to help promote chess in the city.

In March 2022, the Sticky Fingers Arts Centre bought a giant chess set and held an outdoor festival at Marcus Square on Hill Street in the city centre. The event attracted lots of children bursting with enthusiasm.

Following the success of this festival, the arts centre will now host an afternoon rapid on 8th May from 1:30pm to 5pm to help generate the beginnings of a Newry chess community.

Keeping with the format of the monthly Children’s Chess events at Methodist College Belfast, the tournament will be 6 rounds of 15+0.

Entry fee will be £10 with 6 trophies/shields as prizes:

Please note, due to renovation work, the centre will be limited to 18 players at this tournament. Also please note the art centre cafe is currently closed at weekends therefore players are advised to bring a drink with them. Food will not be allowed in the playing hall.

Initially this tournament will be promoted to players within the city of Newry but players further afield are very welcome to attend, space permitting. Players need to preregister to newrychess@gmail.com - if space is available, the player will be sent details on how to make an online payment. No cash will be handled on the day.
