Childrens Chess 5th November 2022 at Methodist College

Youngsters gathered at Methodist College for an afternoon of chess games and puzzle solving. The first in our Childrens Chess afternoons over which a Grandprix is run resulting in top players being invited to an Elite tournament and Prize Ceremony usually held at Stormont.

Many thanks to volunteers Andrew Todd, Geoff Hindly and Karina Campbell. We setup the boards in the two playing rooms and arrows to the rooms and registration of players started. All players who had previously registered attended which makes the organisation alot smoother. We had 21 players of all ages in one section. As usual we had a puzzle solving competition. Two sheets one for Primary students and one for Secondary. 22 puzzles on each sheet with space for the pupil to set a puzzle. This provides an opportunity for youngsters to discuss chess and we will give pointers/hints to the harder puzzles. Below are some of the puzzles with solutions at the end of the page. All players get their sheets marked and returned with a certificate.

Once one round is over we start the next one and try to squeeze as many rounds into the afternoon as we can. The puzzles provide an activity to be done between rounds. James Huang wins against Caleb McClean and takes the lead with Ashwanth Subramanian who wins against Louison Fuchs. We are fortunate to have such a quality group of players.
